Buddleia (Butterfly Bush) Care Guide

A magnet for butterflies and pollinators, with long fragrant flower spikes all summer.

perennial full-sun pollinator drought-tolerant fragrant

Overview

Buddleia (Buddleja davidii), commonly called Butterfly Bush, is renowned for its long, fragrant flower spikes that attract butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds from summer through fall. The compact Buzz series — including Hot Raspberry, Ivory, Magenta, and Midnight — stays 2–3 feet tall, making it suitable for smaller gardens and containers. An exceptionally rewarding, low-maintenance perennial.

Sun & Exposure

  • Ideal: Full sun (6+ hours daily)
  • Tolerated: Part sun, though flowering will be reduced
  • Needs good air circulation to prevent powdery mildew

Watering

Once established, Butterfly Bush is quite drought tolerant.

  • Water regularly the first season to establish a strong root system
  • After establishment, water during extended dry spells only
  • Avoid overwatering — soggy soil leads to root rot

Soil & Planting

  • Well-draining soil is essential; tolerates poor to average soils
  • Does not tolerate heavy clay or consistently wet conditions
  • Plant in spring after frost danger has passed; space 2–3 feet apart
  • Slightly alkaline to neutral pH preferred

Fertilizing

Less is more with Buddleia — too much fertilizer produces foliage at the expense of flowers.

  • Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer once in early spring
  • Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers

Pruning

Hard pruning in spring is the key to the best performance.

  • In early spring (when you see green buds breaking), cut stems back to 12–18 inches above ground
  • This stimulates vigorous new growth and the most prolific flowering
  • Deadhead spent spikes throughout summer to encourage continuous blooming

Winter Care

Hardy in zones 5–9. In zone 5, mulch the crown heavily after the first hard frost. Stems often die back in winter but roots survive — don't panic if the plant looks dead in spring.
