Overview
Dianthus (Dianthus spp.), commonly called Garden Pinks or Carnations, are beloved for their fringed, often fragrant flowers and blue-green grassy foliage. The Rockin Red and Rockin Rose varieties are vigorous, heat-tolerant performers. Everlast Cherry Swirl features distinctive bicolor blooms with exceptional longevity. Most modern varieties are repeat-blooming from spring through fall.
Sun & Exposure
- Ideal: Full sun (6+ hours daily)
- Tolerated: Light afternoon shade in hot climates
- Excellent air circulation helps prevent disease
Watering
Dianthus prefers moderate moisture with good drainage.
- Water at the base to keep foliage dry
- Allow the top inch of soil to dry between waterings
- Very drought tolerant once established
- Avoid overwatering — the most common cause of decline
Soil & Planting
- Well-draining, average to lean soil
- Neutral to slightly alkaline pH (6.5–7.5) — dislikes acidic soil
- Excellent in raised beds and containers
- Plant in spring or fall; space 10–14 inches apart
Fertilizing
- Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring
- A light liquid feed monthly during the bloom season maintains vigor
- Avoid excessive nitrogen, which promotes foliage over flowers
Pruning & Deadheading
- Deadhead spent blooms regularly to keep plants tidy and encourage reblooming
- After the main flush, shear plants back by one-third to promote a fresh flush of growth and flowers
- Remove any dead or yellowing foliage from the base
Winter Care
Hardy in zones 4–9 depending on variety. Evergreen foliage provides some winter interest. Excellent drainage is more important than temperature — wet winter soil kills Dianthus faster than cold.
